China’s leader has spoken to US President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his stunning election victory.

President Xi Jinping and Trump spoke on the phone Sunday night, and "established a clear sense of mutual respect for one another," according to a short statement from Trump's transition team.

China's President Xi Jinping called U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday night and told him that cooperation is "the only correct choice for China and the United States," Chinese state media reported on Monday.

China, he said, is willing to continue its cooperation with the administration of outgoing US President Barack Obama, so as to ensure a smooth transition of bilateral ties to the next US administration.

Meanwhile, Beijing also stands ready to communicate with Trump's team, so as to cement mutual understanding and expand consensus on bilateral cooperation, added the Chinese foreign minister.

Citing Chinese President Xi Jinping's congratulatory message to Trump, Wang said China is willing to push for greater progress in China-US ties on the new starting point on the basis of the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation.

"China is a great and important country, and China's development is remarkable," Trump is quoted as saying.

"The US and China can achieve mutual benefits and win-win results. I would love to work with you to enhance the cooperation between US and China. I'm sure the Sino-US relations will achieve better development."
