Paceman Jackson Bird took two wickets, with Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon grabbing one wicket apiece before the premature close at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Azhar Ali was unbeaten on 66, with Asad Shafiq on four not out.

Rain in Melbourne forced day one of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan to be abandoned.

A change in weather saw the covers come out at the MCG on Monday, with Pakistan 142-4, and the rain persisted as officials ended proceedings approaching 17:00 (local time).

Pakistan will resume on Tuesday, with Azhar Ali (66 not out) and Asad Shafiq (4) unbeaten in the second of three Tests.

A crowd in excess of 50,000 flocked to the MCG after Australia overcame the tourists by just 39 runs in a thrilling day-night showdown in Brisbane last week.

Australia won the first test by 39 runs in Brisbane and brought an unchanged side to the MCG where they will bid to seal the three-match series with a game to spare.

Pakistan, who has lost four tests in succession, made one change, with right-arm paceman Sohail Khan replacing left-armer Rahat Ali.
