Worshippers worldwide mark anniversary of Battle of Karbala and mourn death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet's grandson.
Tasu’a, known as the Day of Loyalty and Resistance, is
devoted to Abbas ibn Ali, the half-brother of Imam Hussein, because of his
sacrifices in the Battle of Karbala.
Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and
his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, in 680
AD after fighting courageously for justice against the much larger army of the
Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, which some historians estimate to have been some 100,000-strong.

Large numbers of Iranians have joined Shia Muslims of
different nationalities in rituals in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
The latter is home to Imam Hussein’s
shrine.
Pakistan, As part of security measures being taken, mobile
phone services will remain partially suspended in some cities across Pakistan
on Tuesday and Wednesday (9 and 10 Muharram).
Strict security measures have been taken throughout the
country for Ashura to prevent any untoward incident.
The main 9th Muharram procession will be taken out from
several cities including Quetta, Islamabad, Multan, Lahore, Peshawar and
Karachi.
The Iraqi army and pro-government forces have been preparing
for months to attack the Takfiri Daesh terrorists in Mosul, which fell into the
hands of the terrorists in 2014.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in
Iraq says an estimated 700,000 people would need assistance once the offensive
gets underway.
